What is the ICBC motorcycle knowledge test?

The ICBC motorcycle knowledge test is the written exam you must pass to start riding in British Columbia. Passing it earns you a motorcycle learner's licence, the first stage on the road to a full Class 6 motorcycle licence. The test checks that you understand riding-specific safety, motorcycle controls, and the rules of the road before you take a motorcycle out.

You take the test on a touch-screen at an ICBC driver licensing office. This page gives you free, realistic practice based on the official “Learn to Ride Smart” manual.

How many questions are on the test and what is the pass mark?

The ICBC motorcycle knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 40 correctly — 80% — to pass. The questions mix road signs and general rules of the road with motorcycle-specific topics such as protective gear, controls, and cornering.

Match the real test

Each practice attempt here has 50 questions and a 40/50 pass mark. The timed exam-simulation mode adds a 45-minute clock, just like the real test.

What does the motorcycle knowledge test cover?

Questions are based on the official ICBC “Learn to Ride Smart” manual. The main topics are:

  • Protective gear — helmets, eye protection, and riding clothing
  • Motorcycle controls, the friction zone, and gear changes
  • Starting, slow-speed control, cornering, and braking
  • Counter-steering and emergency manoeuvres
  • Lane position, conspicuity, and sharing the road
  • Road signs, signals, and the rules of the road
  • Riding in rain, wind, cold, and at night

How much does it cost and how do I book?

The knowledge test costs $15, and it is free for people aged 65 and older. You can book online through icbc.com or visit a driver licensing office. The test is offered in several languages.

What should I bring to the ICBC office?

Bring acceptable identification that proves your name, date of birth, and signature. You will also complete a vision screening at the office before your licence is issued.

What happens after I pass the knowledge test?

After you pass the knowledge test and vision screening, ICBC issues your motorcycle learner's licence. As a learner you may ride only in daylight, with no passengers, below a set speed limit, while supervised and wearing an approved helmet. After holding your learner's licence for the required period you can take the motorcycle skills test, then later an on-road test toward a full Class 6 licence. Our motorcycle licensing guide explains every stage.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official ICBC motorcycle test?
No. BC Knowledge Test is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with ICBC. Our questions are original and written to cover the same material as the official “Learn to Ride Smart” manual.
How many questions are on the ICBC motorcycle knowledge test?
The real test has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 40 correct (80%) to pass. Each practice test here uses the same format.
Do I need a car licence before the motorcycle knowledge test?
No, you do not need a full car licence first. The motorcycle knowledge test is the starting point for the motorcycle licensing path in BC. Check current eligibility details with ICBC.
Is the test the same as the car knowledge test?
It overlaps on road signs and rules of the road, but the motorcycle test adds rider-specific topics such as protective gear, the friction zone, counter-steering, and lane positioning. Practise with the motorcycle bank specifically.
